Which growing Tech companies do employees love the most?

If you’re looking for a new job and are keen to work for a tech company who are really going places where you can join them on an exciting journey then this list may give you some food for thought.

The Sunday Times Tech Track 100 shows the UK’s fastest growing private tech (TMT) companies ranked by sales over the last three years.

(We’ll reveal the next set of rankings in September 2018)

Knowing that a company is doing great sales wise gives you an idea that something is going right but are they a great company to work for or do those sales come at the cost of employee welfare? Is the CEO a psychopath? Do they have a vision that everyone believes in? Does the future look good not just in the short term but in the medium too?

We’ve taken the Tech Track 100 companies and added their Glassdoor employee data to get a better view of whether these companies are good to work for. (Glassdoor for those who aren't aware is the world's biggest database of company reviews written from the employee perspective)

We’ve looked at the top companies for overall Glassdoor score, whether employees like them enough to recommend to a friend, whether they approve of the CEO and if they think the company is going to improve over the next 6 months.

The top companies are shown below in each of these categories with the entire dataset at the bottom of the blog

Nb.  We haven’t included any companies that have less than 4 reviewers as the results would be too skewed and have excluded those without any Glassdoor profiles.  (This may have had an impact on newer and smaller companies in the top 100).  The companies also vary in size and in the number of reviewers so we have used a general Top 10 without ranking each as it would be unfair

Which Top 5 companies are universally loved the most?

1. Brainlabs (Ranked highly in all 4 sections) with 32 reviews

Brainlabs is a performance Marketing agency  who run online advertising campaigns and build technology to help the campaigns run more efficiently. Its programmes take into account factors such as the weather, time of day, user location and user profile to help set the right price for clients’ online advertising.  That is why they call themselves ‘the official world champions of PPC’

2. Smarkets (Ranked highly in 3 sections) with 43 reviews

Smarkets is a peer-to-peer betting site which allows users to set their own odds on sports events, politics and current affairs. It was started the company in 2008 in an attempt to undercut traditional bookmakers by applying financial trading principles to sports betting. ‘Betting should be priced as a commodity, because it is one’

3. Kimble Applications (Ranked highly in all 4 sections globally) with 42 reviews

Kimble provides professional services firms with software. Its features include budget tracking, forecasting and resource scheduling and launched new software last year that identifies patterns in data to suggest what steps are needed next in project management. nb. Kimble's Glassdoor score is global rather than just for the UK so this result may be skewed towards the US rather than UK

4. Touchnote (Ranked highly in 3 sections) with 11 reviews

Touchnote is an app for sending postcards, greeting cards, personalised canvases and framed photos.  Users upload a photo from their smartphone or tablet and add a message; TouchNote then prints the result and posts it. nb. Touchnote is one of the smaller companies in this list and have a higher proportion of respondents on Glassdoor which may have pushed them up the ranks

5. PrivateFly (Ranked highly in 3 sections) with 9 reviews

PrivateFly’s website and app enables customers to search for and book flights on 7,000 privately owned jets. They have expanded from St Albans to Florida in the last few years as there has been an increased uptake by leisure and business customers, including celebrity jetsetters and high-flying executives.  Interestingly there is another company, Victor, in this list Top 100 too with a similar offering.

Are these companies really loved the most?

Using Glassdoor as an indicator can be mildly dangerous.  Disgruntled ex employees can give a false impression as can employees who have been asked to write a review or feel they must show a company in a positive light.   It might also depend on your outlook on the day you write your review.

It is generally a good indicator however of whether a company is heading in the right direction and is a useful first step for researching which companies to look at further.

The guide below is also a good indicator of which sectors or industries are on their way up.  For example, you'll notice there are a large number of financial companies especially in the online payments area.  It may be time to consider a different type of company for your future career.
