Berkshire JS #1

18 June 2019

Maidenhead

Added 01-Jan-1970

Welcome to the first Berkshire JS! For our first event we have two excellent speakers from the world of JavaScript to inform and entertain.

For our first meetup we have:

Jo Franchetti (@ThisIsJoFrank), Go Go PWA Rangers!

Progressive web apps allow us to bring a native-like experience to our web apps. Download to homescreen, performance improvements, discoverability and offline functionality are all made possible without having to learn a native language. We’ll take a look at the reasons that you should consider a PWA, how you can make your current web app a PWA and what happens next. With support now from multiple app stores and most modern browsers it really has never been a better time to make your next app a PWA and become a Hero of the Web!

Jo is the Engineering Engagement Manager at Trainline. She is passionate about WebVR, PWAs and great CSS. She’s got 7 years experience as a front end developer and has worked in various parts of the tech industry from startups, agencies, charities to large organisations. She is also a mentor and organiser at codebar.io where she is able to act on her passion not only for teaching good use of the web but also for improving the diversity and inclusivity of the tech industry.

We also have:

Nick Meldrum (@nick_meldrum), Building and deploying serverless JS

Serverless platforms offer the promise of providing a simpler model for hosting an application in the cloud. The ecosystem is still immature and evolving at a frightening pace. This talk will be an overview of where we are currently, focused on AWS, but exploring the various options out there to make the building, deployment and maintenance of your application simpler.

Nick is a software developer who loves JavaScript and loves a simple approach to things. Mostly because he gets caught up in too much complexity when left alone.
