Abstract

Cloud Native systems are made up of many moving parts that can fail, that are then built on top of and integrated with systems that can also fail. Throw into this mix the need for these parts to be under the stress of constant change and improvement under the increasingly pressures of the business to deliver more and faster, and building systems that are reliable enough to have confidence in is a real challenge.

The first step to working with these systems is to increase the Observability, so you can navigate them and be able to inspect what is going right or wrong on your system from the outside-in. High quality, centralised logging that gives access to the log stream as navigable events is known to be a crucial underpinning of system observability and in this talk by Russ Miles, CEO of ChaosIQ, and Martin Westergaard Lassen from Humio will show how you can use the powerful observability capabilities of Humio, plus the learning-loops of Chaos Engineering, to work with and improve your critical, Cloud Native systems.

Russ Miles' Bio

Russ Miles is the Geek on a Harley and CEO of ChaosIQ.io where he and his team build commercial and open source (ChaosToolkit.org) products and provide services to companies applying Chaos Engineering to build confidence in their Cloud Native, Microservice-based systems on Kubernetes, AWS, Pivotal Cloud Foundry and more.

As well as being the Geek, Russ is an international speaker and author of 3 published book, most recently working on "Antifragile Software: Building Adaptable Software with Microservices" where he explores how to apply Chaos Engineering to construct and manage complex, distributed systems in production with confidence.

Martin's Bio

Martin is a full-stack software developer with a passion for microservices. He’s recently been working with Apache Mesos and Cloud Native Applications. Martin has gained his experience with Apache Mesos by contributing to the Elasticsearch and Logstash frameworks and leading the development of Mesos-Starter.
With a BSc in engineering (IT) from SDU and previous experiences, Martin helps integrating Humio with new customers.
