Is the SEO job market still where it’s at?

The SEO market has had a bit of a dip over the last few years but has grown stronger than ever in 2017.  Google continues to keep us on our toes with monthly updates, albeit quiet ones, such as Fred hitting more specific types of sites rather than all websites.

SEO jobs may be changing however with SEO becoming more of a standard skill or necessity for marketers rather than always being a specific job in itself.  Content jobs are now more popular than SEO jobs but nearly half of all content jobs now require SEO skills.  This makes sense when Google’s focus is increasingly on quality content and natural language rather than traditional SEO techniques.  Companies often discover that finding staff that are high quality content writers and who also have seriously advanced SEO skills can be tricky.

New technology will also be changing the world of SEO in the coming years especially with the huge investment Google is making into machine learning, natural language and mobile.

Google’s RankBrain now has so much data that it can provide answers even when the asker doesn’t know the right question.  The results should get better and better over time and the implications for SEO and even humanity can only be guessed at currently.

Voice search is still in its infancy but with personal assistants, smart devices and home automation with technology such as Samsung’s Bixby,  Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home becoming more commonplace, it appears that we are at the beginning of a shift in consumer behaviour once again.  This will have an impact for marketing and SEO especially with differences in the way that people speak in comparison to what they would type when searching. 

All of this means that the traditional SEO job will probably change significantly but may be more in demand than ever.
