How your Unix skills can help you

Unix has been the dominant operating system for workstations since the 1970s and covers a range of Unix and Unix-like systems such as IRIX (SGI), HP-UX (HP), Solarix (Sun) and Linux.

Unix isn’t spoken about much anymore but it still exists everywhere.  It could be in your phone, router, Apple Mac, TV, camera or GPS and almost every public DNS server, external web server and managed switch is running some variant of *nix.  If we didn’t have Unix there wouldn’t be any networks.

If we’re going down the *nix route then contemplate the immensity of Linux usage from 90% of internet servers, Android phones to Cloud computing and storage such as EC2.

There is a plethora of legacy Unix systems in retail, wholesale, logistics, pharmaceutical,  banking and more.  The big players such as Oracle and SAP still run on Unix whilst start-ups are typically on the Cloud (also Unix platforms).

Linux is now putting Unix under pressure and a long gradual decline of Unix is expected.   A fundamental shift is happening in the market as organisations migrate workloads towards Linux to support huge datacentres and leverage private and public cloud deployments in a cost effective manner.

It has been predicted that this year 65% of core enterprise applications running on proprietary Unix systems will migrate to Linux based architecture.  Linux is now thought to surpass the performance, scalability and reliability of Unix but with added cost savings through server consolidation. It is Open Source and because there is less risk of critical applications no longer being supported it is now thought to be the ‘strategic Unix of choice’.  Migration isn’t an easy option however and many companies are so reliant on Unix that they still plan to stay on it indefinitely

If you know Unix well it is still a highly desirable skill and there are over 12,000 contract and permanent Unix jobs in the UK.  It doesn’t always treat its learners well but it is hard to beat its power and versatility once mastered.  It may also be advisable to have Linux experience in your portfolio of skills for future career opportunities but it should be easy to learn if you are used to Unix-like operating systems such as AIX, Solaris or HP-UX.  Shell scripting is also handy.  As Unix becomes even older there will be fewer people with the skills to keep crucial infrastructure running so you should be in demand for a long time yet.
