LinkedIn Profile Building - Helping you find your next job!

LinkedIn is a great platform to use if you're seeking a new job, it offers the chance to pick up new skills, and build relationships within your professional network that can further your career. LinkedIn currently has 850+ million users worldwide, including recruiters and potential employers, opening countless new opportunities for you, and this shows, eight people are hired every minute via LinkedIn!

However, with the competitive nature of the job market, and the millions of professionals on LinkedIn it can be hard to stand out. So, here’s our guide to getting noticed amongst the millions of LinkedIn users!

Update your profile

It’s vital your LinkedIn profile stays up to date, you must think of this as an online representation of your professional self. Your profile is the first thing a business or recruiter will see, so make sure it presents you in the best way possible, list your skills, and experience, and shout about your recent success.

  • Upload a profile picture: Research shows that LinkedIn users with a profile photo get 21x more views and up to 9x more connection requests than members that don’t, after all, first impressions count. It is recommended that you dress in what you’d wear to work in your profile picture.
  • Highlight your skills and experience: This section of your profile is called ‘summary’ on LinkedIn. You should treat this section like a sales pitch, and talk about your professional life, ambitions, motivations, and highlights of your career so far. Remember though, this section shouldn’t be too lengthy, the ideal range should be around 4 to 5 sentences. LinkedIn also offers a ‘featured section’, this section should be used to showcase work you’re most proud of, such as articles, or you can attach other forms of media such as documents or images.
  • Using the ‘open to work’ feature: If you’re actively looking for a new job, you can use the ‘open to work’ feature, this not only lets your network know you’re looking for a new job but places a banner on your profile picture so you’re even more likely to get noticed. Stats show that those using this feature receive 40% more messages from recruiters, so it’s worth using.
  • Extra features: LinkedIn is now offering an audio recording feature that can be used to help recruiters and businesses pronounce your name properly. This is something to use if you have a name that people struggle to pronounce and can be a part of making a good first impression in the initial hiring stages. Like to ‘open to work’ feature, there is also an ‘I’m hiring’ feature. This feature is used by recruiters and is something you should look out for when on your job search.

Finding your new job

Once you’ve set up your perfect profile, showcasing your skills, experience, and highlights of your career so far, here are the next steps to take:

  • Make use of your existing network: When you begin your job search it’s always a good idea to start with your current network, think of anyone you know that might be hiring. Connections on LinkedIn can also offer support, by sharing that you’re looking for a new job as well as offering you advice.
  • Referrals: Stats show that you’re 4x more likely to get a job where you have been referred. It’s a great idea to connect with employees of a company you’d like to join, show them your skills and experience, and ask for a referral.
  • Job alerts: There is now no excuse for missing new opportunities! LinkedIn allows you to set up job alerts, meaning whenever a new job gets listed that matches your search criteria, you’ll be the first to hear about it.

We hope you found these tips useful, but remember, with the stiff competition in the current job market it’s important to stay proactive and positive in your job search. Best of luck with your job search and we hope you find a dream role soon!
