NYC .NET Hacktoberfest 2019

1 October 2019

New York

Added 01-Jan-1970

Interested in contributing to open source software? Interested in getting some free swag? Come join us on Tuesday, October 1st for our first annual NYC .NET Hacktoberfest celebration. Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software. Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like and others they've just discovered. No contribution is too small — bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating.

IMPORTANT: Your RSVP with full name is required to add your name to the building security guest list.

EVENING DETAILS

6:00PM - NETWORKING: Doors open, head to the room identified when you check in. Take the opportunity to mingle with your fellow community developers.

6:30PM - INTRODUCTION: A quick introduction into what Hacktoberfest is all about.

6:35PM - CONTRIBUTING TO MICROSOFT OPEN SOURCE PROJECTS: A guide at how to find good first issues to work on for Microsoft (and non-Microsoft) open source projects followed by a hands-on demo of how to fork a branch and submit a Pull Request on GitHub.

7:00PM - MY EXPERIENCES WITH CONTRIBUTING TO A MICROSOFT OPEN SOURCE PROJECT: A first-hand look at the process and timeline of a developer who submitted a PR to a Microsoft Open Source Project.

7:15PM - OPEN SOURCE AND YOUR CAREER: A quick presentation on why contributing to open source is good for your resume, and a look at what the current .NET job market in NYC looks like.

7:30PM - PROJECT HIGHLIGHT - QRI - A quick pitch from Brooklyn-based Qri on why you should contribute to their open source project.

7:35PM - 8:30PM - OPEN HACK HOUR - Take the time to find a good first issue to work on and ask any questions.
